An anticipation guide (Rozelle and Scearce 2009) can be introduced as a pre-reading activity that requires students to draw upon their prior knowledge to make connections to the text to be read.  The guide can further engage the interest of the potential reader in the topic of the text to be read.  Questions and statements will be provided that require the reading to agree or disagree, and further with variations the reding might be asked to explain why they agree or disagaree with the statement.  Once the tasks on the guide hav been completed, the reader will have a morsel of knowledge of the topic within the passage to wet their appetites which will aid in comprehension.
