Frontloading or pre-teaching vocabulary is an excellent before-reading instructional strategy to facilitate student comprehension.  A number of evidence-based instructional strategies are available to frontload targeted vocabulary, thereby enhancing opportunities for student success in core content.  The linked article highlights some of those strategies, the Frayer Model, Vocabulary Choice Board, RAFT activity, Vocabulary Cards.  Information is provided that outlines use of Lexile leveling to assure a good match with passage reading level and student independent level for instructional materials other than reading instructional materials.
